8 of my Favorite Cafés to Work and Study in Barcelona

Aside from having amazing coffee I would never be able to replicate at home, the perfect café atmosphere can also be inspiring. Many expats, international students and travelers (myself included) are always on the lookout for great places to blog, get some work done or just leech off the internet somewhere comfortable.

After living in Barcelona for a few years, I’ve worked and studied at tons of cafés throughout the city. Maybe overstaying my welcome in a few. Well, I bought a coffee didn’t I?

Here’s a list of some of my favorite cafés to work and study in Barcelona:

Café Martí, one of the best cafés to study in Barcelona

1. Café Martí

This two-story café situated two blocks off of the famous shopping street Passeig de Gracia has a reliable internet connection and friendly service. The best thing is that all of the amazing fresh baked goods are discounted every evening at around 6pm. Just make sure you don’t arrive during merienda, afternoon snack! There’s limited seating.

2. Café Camelia

This is a local vegetarian café in the Gràcia district with a pleasant atmosphere and service. The moist cakes and fresh squeezed juices will lift your spirits when you have a lot of work to do.

3. Alsur Café Llúria

With multiple locations in the city, the café on Roger de Llúria is by far the best to work at. There are two levels with large tables to spread out your notes and the entire menu is delicious! I recommend the grilled cheese waffle sandwich, vegetarian hallumi sandwich or if your really hungry, the cabrita burger. A post-study cocktail is essential and will set you back as little as €3.50.

Green Shots Cafe to Study

4. Green Shots

I love that this health-conscious café is spacious and light with floor-to-ceiling windows. No one will bother you here and the coffee and cold pressed detox juices are a great pick me up. My favorite is Go Green made to order with fresh spinach, pear, cucumber and apple.

5. Le Pain Quotidien

A sought after reprieve from bustling Diagonal Avenue, Le Pain Quotidien has a reliable internet connection, great atmosphere and sufficient outlets available if you’re like me and your laptop’s battery doesn’t hold its charge like it used to. Choose to sit in the back room and you’ll have a quiet corner to yourself. Although a bit pricy, it’s also a great place for a healthy bite to eat.

6. Laie Librería Café

You can always find people studying or in meetings at this two-story café. The first floor is a large bookshop, while the café and restaurant is upstairs. It even has an outdoor patio, the perfect place to get some fresh air.

7. La Esquina

This coffee shop and kitchen has an inspiring interior design and great selection of teas. The food made from locally sourced ingredients is also delicious and presented with care. During the week it’s easy to find many international students from the nearby University of Barcelona studying and enjoying a coffee here.

8. Petit à Petit Café

I wouldn’t recommend working here after school lets out at 5pm because many people bring their children, but it’s a wonderful place to work at any other hour, especially in the morning. The café’s large windows open out to a quiet street and provide a nice breeze during the hot Barcelona summer. Café Americano (American coffee) is my drink of choice. A pitcher of hot water comes with a strong cup of espresso so you can dilute it according to your preference.
